The soul of a handmade item is born from the soul of its maker.
About The Maker
My name is Carolyn August. I design and create functional and decorative ceramics, fulfilling a lifelong desire to work with my hands.
My childhood was filled with endless creative endeavors, including art, music and theater. I feel most at home in the world when I’m creating. My curiosity is constantly leading me into new creative territory. My intention is simple: to offer items that enrich everyday life. From my hands to yours, I hope to add a little beauty to your world.
The wonders of clay never cease to amaze me. The limitless possibilities of taking a lump of earth, giving it form and heating it to permanence is a most satisfying experience. Clay can become almost anything. It is literally, pliable stone.
A Little History
Some of my ancestors were potters. My great-great grandfather, August Uhl, immigrated to America from Germany in 1848 and settled in southern Indiana. His brother, Louis, later joined him and together they started Uhl Pottery in the town of Evansville. Their utilitarian pottery business lasted for almost 100 years. The Uhl Pottery Collectors Society was formed in 1985 and is the official organization dedicated to collecting and preserving Uhl pottery. The members gather for an annual convention and auction once a year. My parents were active members for many years and assembled a nice collection of this historic pottery.
